Patrick Hennessy (painter)

Patrick Anthony Hennessy RHA (28 August 1915 – 30 December 1980) was an Irish realist painter.〔The Life and Works of Patrick Hennessy by Kevin Andrew Rutledge/The Municipal Gallery of Modern Art/01/05/1987〕 Known for his still lifes, landscapes and ''trompe l'oeil'' paintings.〔Dictionary of Irish Artists: 20th Century by Theo Snoddy p.181.〕 The hallmark of his style was his carefully observed realism and his highly finished surfaces the result of a virtuoso painting technique.〔Source:Dictionary of Irish Biography Hennessy Patrick by Rebecca Minch〕
Born in Ireland and raised in Scotland. He studied drawing and painting at the Dundee School of Art under James Mackintosh Patrick. Two of his paintings were accepted by the Royal Scottish Academy for exhibition in 1939.〔The Courier and Advertiser-21/04/39-Scots Artists View Modern World-113th Exhibition of the RSA-Patrick Hennessy Arbroath,who has a still life in Room IV, is also represented by a powerfully executed self portrait in the next gallery ...an oil painting showing his meticulous observation and delicacy of line.〕 Later that year on the outbreak of war he returned to Ireland and began his career as a professional painter. Over the following 29 years he built up his reputation in Ireland Britain and America through commissions and exhibitions. In 1949 he was elected a member of the Royal Hibernian Academy. He moved to Morocco in 1968 and died in London in 1980.〔Dictionary of Irish Artists P.181〕
